Cocktail bar in London experience

"The Old Bank of England" in London, England, is a cocktail bar that is primarily known as one of the most impressive traditional pubs in the city. It is located in a historic building that originally served as the Law Courts Branch of the Bank of England from 1888 to 1975, before being converted into a pub in 1994. Since 2013, it has been operated by McMullen & Sons, a renowned brewery from Hertfordshire, which has breathed new life into the venue. The building, a Grade II listed property, was constructed in 1886 in a grand Italianate style by architect Sir Arthur Blomfield and features opulent interior decor. The bar is situated in an area also known for its connection to the fictional story of Sweeney Todd, whose barber shop and Mrs. Lovett's pie shop are said to be located nearby.

Traditional pub with history

The drink menu at "The Old Bank of England" is diverse, highlighting its identity as a cocktail bar, even though it is not exclusively focused on cocktails. The bar takes particular pride in its selection of McMullen beers, including hand-pumped Real Ales like the popular McMullen’s Cask Ale and seasonal specialties from Hertfordshire. The cocktail list is solid, though not the main focus, offering classic mixed drinks such as a Gin and Tonic or a Whisky Sour, often made with quality spirits from the region. This is complemented by a wide range of wines and other spirits catering to a varied audience. Drinks are served in an ambiance that is unmatched due to its historical grandeur, featuring three large chandeliers, a detailed plaster ceiling, and impressive murals on the walls.

Particularly popular are the homemade pies, such as the Chicken & Mushroom Pie or the Steak & Ale Pie, which impress with their crispy crust and rich fillings. The Sunday Roast, served with succulent meat, Yorkshire pudding, and seasonal vegetables, is a highlight for many guests. For lighter options, there are small plates like fried shrimp or seasonal salads, while a gluten-free selection makes the offering more inclusive. The dishes are freshly prepared and reflect McMullen's philosophy of "honest pub food" – straightforward yet of high quality.

Booked Sunday lunch here, and we weren't disappointed. From arrival, the staff were very attentive and appeared happy in their jobs always had a smile. The food was also very good. Looking forward to our next visit.

Could be a lot better. The interior is truly beautiful but the ambience is let down considering the history with speakers high on the walls pumping out disco music like it’s a pre nightclub location. The other main issue I had was queue jumping and staff who appeared to be very tired as they were not noticing who was next to be served in the very large serving area. Waited nearly 20 minutes to be served whilst other clients were served in five minutes. Most of the real ales were not available so had to have the keg beers. Empty glasses everywhere. In all, I expected a lot better. Clearly understaffed and not fair on the staff working there. Great place but soured by the experience of horrible music and poor service. Will not be back and not recommended. There are better more historic pubs in the vicinity.

visited yesterday with cousins from Ireland who really wanted to see it . The customer service was dreadful , I rarely leave reviews but this was as bad as it gets . I waited 15 minutes to be served drinks , there were 5 people behind the bar and one serving . I then went back to order food and after being ignored for a further 15 minutes we left without even finishing our drinks . Beautiful building appalling service !!

After viewing on social media I expected a cross between a bar and pub experience. This was certainly much more of a pub/Wetherspoons style venue. It has outside space so may be better in the summer months however volume levels internally render it practically unusable. With no live music one is left wondering of the value of attending.

Food was ok and tasty but the service and atmosphere let the place down. Took ages to be served and plates whipped away when we finished.👎🏻

Fantastic! This elegant grand building tastefully restored and decorated by McMullens. It's a pleasure just to sit there and admire the decor and the huge chandelier's. The pub also has outside space with a red bus you can sit in! Looking forward to this in the summer!!!!
